Parent/ student advocation policy!! Please read!
As students continue further into their education, it becomes essential that they learn
to engage in purposeful and meaningful conversations with their instructors as well as with other adults. The following guidelines are very useful in helping kids communicate with me in order to achieve the most success throughout the year.
Step 1 – Students should check my homework blog several times a week to remain current with class work and assignments.
- If a student is absent, he /she MUST check the blog for work missed. If this is not possible, students should see me prior to the start of the school day upon his return. Class time will be used for the current day’s work.
Step 2 – Review posted grades every few weeks. Remember end of the term grades are averaged together, so it is not necessary to panic over one unsatisfactory grade. Students should work harder on the next assignment or ask for clarification and or assistance.
Step 3 – After reviewing grades, parents should discuss student’s progress (both positive and negative) with student. Celebrate the successes and figure out what made the student successful. Discuss lower or unsatisfactory work; consider student effort verses student’s understanding as the assignment was completed.
Step 4 – Review graded papers or assignments for teacher comments and feedback.
Step 5 – Students should advocate for themselves by setting up a time with me to discuss progress and/or assistance needed. Many assignments may be redone (see requirements on syllabus) to improve student understanding and grades.
Step 6 – After student/teacher meeting, parents should contact me either through email or by phone. Every effort will be made to return all communication within 24 hours.
As we progress through the year, it is to the student’s benefit that they not only accept the responsibility for their work and grades, but also that they work to develop positive communication skills with their teachers. Hopefully these guidelines help make this process a little easier!
